THE FXB PURPLE RABBIT
In 1989, Albina du Boisrouvray founded the Fran?ois-Xavier Bagnoud
Association, whose mission is to give AIDS orphans a future by reinserting
them into society.
When their parents die, orphans are cared for by their extended
family or by the community. But poverty and the spread of AIDS
have meant that the capacity of families and communities to care
for increasing numbers of children has been exceeded.
FXB has addressed this issue by developing the FXB Village Model,
a sustainable community-based development program which creates
a network of a hundred families, whose lives have been ravaged
by poverty and AIDS. It enables them to achieve economic and social
independence in three years, by providing the head of each family
with an income generating activity.
At the same time, FXB provides the families with global support
(nutritional, medical and psychosocial support, education and
training, HIV prevention, legal support, support with saving and
obtaining micro credit) until such time as they become independent.
Each Village costs 125,000 Euros for 3 years. Today there are
32 such Villages in Burundi, China, India, Uganda, Rwanda, and
Thailand. FXB hopes that, with help, it will be able to found
another 50 by the end of 2009. There are currently many operations
running in conjunction with businesses and institutions.
In 1990, Albina du Boisrouvray founded the FXB Chair in Pediatric
Allergy, Immunology and Infectious Diseases at the University
of Medicine of New Jersey.
The first person to occupy the chair was Doctor James Oleske,
a researcher and clinician who had been one of the first to show
that HIV could be transmitted from mother to child. He made friends
with a little boy who was ill and who had a toy rabbit that never
left his side.
One day, the little boy called out to him:
"Please, could you look after my rabbit?"
"Why?" asked the doctor.
"Because I want someone to look after him when I'm not here
any more..."
Since that day, the purple rabbit is always in the doctor's pocket
and has become a friend to all his young patients.
To help the general public take part in their mission, FXB and
the Trousselier company have created the "Purple Rabbit".
